There are lots of sites offering to rank you at the top of page one on Google. The problem with those is that they are ranking keywords that no one or very few other people are using. A common trick is to use the name of your town, which really narrows down the competition.  Then they add several other keywords.

For example: “tips for healthy living in Smithers” has a good chance of ranking you high on Google if you use it. But unless your market it exclusively in Smithers, it won’t do a lot of good. If your market is worldwide, you might try “tips for healthy living.” But then the competition goes from about 500k to almost 2 BILLION!

So what do you do?

  1. Don’t waste your money

    • Don’t waste any money on schemes promising to rocket you to the top of the search engines. You will probably spend way more money than you will ever make.
  2. Do some research

    • Read. Do some studying before you start trying to choose your keywords.  There are lots of sites and blogs on keywords. Take your time and learn how to make keywords work for you before just leaping in.
  3. Get educated

    • Learn how to choose keywords that will rank for you, even if it looks like hardly anyone is searching with them. The key to choosing successful keywords is in choosing keywords that sell what you are selling to someone as often as possible.
  4. Be reasonable

    • Don’t be greedy. A lot of people look at the huge number of people searching for a particular keyword and want to use that one because the number of people searching by that term is so high. But taking our sample “tips for healthy living” with almost 2 Billion results, and cutting it down to “healthy living,” the number of results literally doubles. That means that there is the equivalent of close to half the planet linking to that term. Your chance of being found with that term is considerably less than the chance of getting hit by lightning twice in a lifetime (1 in 9 Million)!
  5. Use phrases

    • Choose “long-tail” keywords that you can easily and naturally fit into the articles and copy on your website. A long-tail keyword is actually a phrase, like our phrase, “tips for healthy living.” But if you want to narrow down the competition, you want to try to make it less competitive, while at the same time, being able to be confident that there are other people in the world who will type in your long-tail keyword in a search query.
  6. Choose keywords you can really use

    • Choose keywords that you can use multiple times in your article or copy in a natural, unforced fashion. You’ve probably seen weird looking articles that are stuffed with nonsense surrounding repeated keywords. Those are recognized as spam by the search engines and are worse than worthless. Don’t do it!
  7. See what the competition is doing

    • Research your competition. Don’t be afraid to use keywords that your competition is using. Just do the work you need to do to get noticed ahead of them by the search engines. When you know your competition, you can figure out what you need to do to outrank them.
  8. Spy tools work – so use them!

    • Use keyword spy tools. They let you test keywords for your niche against your competition. You can then determine whether you have a chance to rank higher with a little effort than your close competition for the same terms, or whether you need to modify your terms.
  9. Be natural

    • Use your keywords as often as you naturally can in your posts and copy. When you’re choosing keywords that sell, it’s crucial to remember that as soon as you start forcing your keywords into your copy in an attempt to rank better, you’re hurting your ranking. Modern search engines use AI (artificial intelligence) that is trained to look for unnaturally occurring words and phrases – aka –  spam. If your sites loses its ranking due to being flagged for this, it will be really hard to reverse the damage.
  10. Keep fine-tuning

    • Keep on checking your keywords and refining them over time. Choosing keywords that sell is not a “one and done” function. Over time, a combination of competition and changing search patterns will likely mean you need to adjust and refine your terms to keep your ranking level. Going back and editing your posts and copy serves the added benefit of helping to keep your material looking fresh to the search engines.
